Earache: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments, and Prevention

What is earache?

Earache is a nasty pain that can feel nagging, but also very intense (stabbing or throbbing). Earache can occur in one ear or in both ears at the same time. Earache mainly affects children. But adults can also get earache. Earache is annoying and can be very painful, but it is not dangerous.

Symptoms of earache

There are 2 types of ear infection. Children with earache usually have middle ear infection: an inflammation behind the eardrum. Middle ear infection usually heals automatically. Often the worst pain is gone within 2 to 3 days. In adults with earache, it is usually an inflammation of the ear canal. An ear canal usually heals within 1 to 3 weeks. You can also suffer from ear pain while flying.

Symptoms of middle ear infection

Sometimes middle ear infection does not cause any complaints. But usually middle ear infection is accompanied by symptoms such as earache, fever and feeling sick. Young children who have earache often cannot tell what they are feeling. For them, middle ear infection can often be recognized by their behavior:

  • Babies with middle ear infection are usually restless at night and often rub the sore ear. They usually do not drink well. They are also often irritable.
  • Toddlers with middle ear infections are dizzy. They have no appetite and can suffer from abdominal pain or diarrhea. They also sometimes have to throw up.

Loop ear through middle ear infection

With middle ear infection there is a lot of pressure on the eardrum (that causes the earache). The eardrum can tear due to this pressure. Then the inflammatory moisture can flow out through the crack; that is a ‘loopoor’. Often there is some blood in the inflammatory fluid. That won’t hurt. As soon as the eardrum is torn and the pressure is released, the earache usually disappears immediately. A barrel usually heals within a week. The eardrum usually closes automatically by itself.

Symptoms of an ear canal

With ear canal inflammation the skin of the ear canal is inflamed. Then you usually suffer from one or more of these symptoms:

  • You have pain, a burning sensation or itching in your ear canal.
  • You have flaking or red, swollen skin in your ear canal.
  • Moisture comes out of your ear canal.
  • You will hear less well due to the swelling or fluid in your ear canal.
  • It hurts when you gently pull your ear.

Causes of earache

Earache can have various causes. The most common cause of ear pain is inflammation of the ear canal, or inflammation of the middle ear. Sometimes ear pain can be caused by a condition outside your ear. For example due to a condition in your mouth (jaw, tongue, teeth) or to your tonsils. By stimulating your nerves, the pain can then spread to your ear.

Causes of middle ear infection

A middle ear infection is often associated with a cold. If you have a cold, the mucous membranes of your nasal cavity and throat are swelling. As a result, the connecting tube (the Eustachius tube) between your nose / throat and your middle ear becomes clogged. Your middle ear is then closed. The cold virus and all kinds of bacteria in your middle ear can then trigger an inflammation. The inflammatory fluid presses on your eardrum. That is going to be full. That pressure in your ear causes the pain.

Causes of ear canal inflammation

Normally the ear canal keeps the skin healthy by earwax. Earwax is greasy and acidic. That has a protective effect. But sometimes the skin of the ear canal becomes irritated. It is not always clear what the cause is. It is known that a narrow ear canal increases the risk of inflammation. Certain diseases also have a greater risk of ear canal infections, such as psoriasis, eczema and (contact) allergy. Sometimes an ear canal infection is caused by an infection with a bacterium or fungus.
In addition, you can sometimes be the cause. These habits and behaviors can irritate your ear canal and cause inflammation:

  • With your finger (s), cotton buds / balls or matches in your ear. As a result, an earwax plug may get deeper into your ear canal and cause inflammation.
  • Care products that end up in your ear, such as soap, shampoo and hair spray.
  • Warmth in combination with moisture in your ear, for example when you shower, take a bath and swim.
  • Things you wear in the ear, such as ‘earphones’ (earphones) or hearing aids.

Prevent earache

Is your earache caused by a pathogen? You can’t do much about that. You can, however, ensure that your ears are as healthy as possible:

  • Do not clean your ears inside. Also do not fiddle with your fingers or an object. Usually the ear canal is automatically cleaned.
  • Do not use skin care products that irritate your skin. And prevent water and care products from getting into your ear when showering, bathing or washing hair. For example, by bending your head forward, or by using earplugs.
  • Always dry your ear cup and the entrance to your ear canal well after taking a shower, bathing or swimming.
  • Do you always get ear infections after swimming? Then it is important to protect your ears: with ear plugs or cotton wool with Vaseline.
  • Do you wear a hearing aid and do you often have pain in your ear? Maybe your hearing aid will not fit properly. Your hearing care professional can view this for you.

Treat earache

In many cases you can relieve ear pain with pain killers. If the earache lasts (too) long, is not well tolerated or returns again and again, it is wise to go to the doctor.  here.

Tips to prevent earache

  • Do not clean your ears inside
  • Prevent soap and water from getting into your ears
  • Always dry your ears well after showering or swimming

Children with earache: when to go to the doctor?

It is advisable to go to the doctor with your child:

  • if your child is less than 2 years old and grabs with his hands to the ears (that may indicate ear pain)
  • if your child is over 2 years old and already has earache and fever for 3 days
  • if inflammatory fluid runs out of the ear for more than 2 weeks (loopoor)
  • if your child continues to cry because of the earache
  • if your child has ear pain for the third time within 1 year
  • if your child has earache and a high fever (more than 40 degrees)
  • if your child’s ear has suddenly become a floppy ear (away from the head)

Adults with earache: when to go to the doctor?

Go to your doctor in the following cases:

  • if your earache is severe
  • if your earache lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • if you have earache and a high fever

If you have a severe ear infection, you are likely to receive antibiotics.
Is there an ear wax plug in your ear? Then the doctor will squirt your ear to remove the plug.

Which medicines can you use for ear pain?

The medication below can help with ear pain. Light painkillers are freely available. Heavier painkillers can only be obtained on prescription from your doctor or specialist. Your BENU Pharmacy has various types of painkillers and can advise you on which painkiller best suits your situation.

In your BENU Pharmacy: pain killers for earache

  • Paracetamol

    Paracetamol is analgesic and fever-reducing.

Ear canal inflammation – Swimmer's Ear (Otitis Externa): Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment

An ear canal is an inflammation of the skin of the ear canal. This is also called a “swimmers’ ear” or otitis externa. Ear canal inflammation is one of the most frequently diagnosed in ENT practice. Approximately three to ten percent of ENT patients visit the ENT doctor with complaints of ear canal infections. Often one patient has an ear canal several times a year. The inflammation is usually caused by a bacterium, but a fungal infection is also possible.

Ear canal

The ear consists of the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear and ear canal form the outer ear. Outer ear and middle ear are separated by the eardrum.

The external ear canal runs from the earcup to the eardrum and directs the sound to the eardrum. The external ear canal is a slightly curved canal covered with skin. In adults, the ear canal is approximately 2.5 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter.

There are 1,000 to 2,000 glands in the skin of the ear canal that produce ear wax. This ensures that the acidity in the ear remains good and thus takes care of the skin in the ear canal.

Earwax serves, among other things, to protect the ear against dirt, dust, bacteria, etc. and transports dander and dirt from the ear canal to the outside. The amount of ear wax can vary per person and even per ear.

Origin of an ear canal infection

The skin of the ear canal is protected by the ear wax, which is acidic and greasy. If the protective factors, such as earwax and intact epidermis, fall away, there is an increased risk of an ear canal.

The best known causes of an ear canal are:

Swimming and bathing

The humidity level in the ear canal is hereby increased and it becomes less acidic, which increases the chance of inflammation. That is why an ear canal infection is also called “swimmers’ ear”.

Ear pruning

When picking in the ear canal and cleaning it yourself with cotton buds, pens, paper clips, matches, keys etc. wounds can occur. This also allows the earwax to be pushed deeper into the ear canal. A plug of ear wax can then also form. Inflammation is easier in the sultry space behind this plug.

Disturbed aeration

A reduced aeration of the ear canal can already give rise to inflammation, for example by prolonged closure of the ear canal with an ear plug. People with a narrow ear canal are more likely to suffer from ear canal infections.

Hair growth

The more hairs are in the outer part of the ear canal, the greater the chance of inflammation due to a disruption of the normal earwax transport mechanism.

Cosmetic products

For example, shampoo, soap and hair spray can irritate the skin in the ear canal. If the skin becomes irritated, it is vulnerable and inflammation can occur more easily.

Allergic skin reaction

Allergic reactions to headphones, (ear pieces of) hearing aids and ear drops can lead to scratching of the ears, resulting in minor damage to the ear canal with increased risk ofinflammation.

Relationship between ear canal inflammation and other disorders

The ear canal may be part of a skin disease such as eczema, psoriasis or contact allergy. With these disorders itchiness is the main thing. During the examination, a (ENT) doctor will therefore also pay attention to the hairy scalp and, for example, the elbow.

Diabetes must also be asked when going through the history of illness. Blood vessel damage based on diabetes can lead to locally reduced blood flow, which can result in skin and cartilage degradation. This same blood vessel damage also makes antibiotic treatment and the body’s immune response less efficient to be.

Causes of an ear canal

Bacterium

The ear canal is usually caused by bacteria in combination with damaged skin. This concerns in a majority of cases the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa can seldom or never come from a healthy ear canal. This is in contrast to an ear canal with damaged skin.

In half the number of cases the inflammation is caused by several bacteria at the same time.

Mold

A fungus as the cause must also be considered. A fungus occurs mainly in a humid, warm climate. That is why a fungal infection of the ear canal is observed more frequently in the summer in the Netherlands. It is then warm and more is being swum, leaving water in the ear canal coming.

Complaints of the different types of ear canal infections

Acute ear canal inflammation

In the acute form the patient will often complain about itching and pain. The pain can be so severe that it prevents the patient from sleeping. There are also often complaints of feeling full in the ear and hearing loss.
Upon examination of the earcup and entrance of the ear canal one sees:

  • a red, swollen skin of the ear canal; sometimes up to the pinna with narrowing of the ear canal and / or
  • a barrel ear and crusting.

Pressure on the cartilage before the ear is painful. The insertion of an ear view by the (ENT) doctor and pulling the ear back is painful. An extensive form of ear canal inflammation will also cause fever and swelling of the lymph nodes around the ear and neck. Due to the swelling or discharge, a patient may temporarily have difficulty hearing.

Chronic ear canal inflammation

With chronic ear canal inflammation, the pain is less prominent. It is mainly the relentless itching that hinders. The skin can be dry and flaky, but also moist (oar). In the case of chronic inflammation, taking a culture can be important to detect the causative agent of the inflammation. Sometimes it is necessary not to use antibiotic-containing ear drops for some time prior to ear culture.

Fungal infection of the ear canal

In the case of a fungal infection, a thick discharge is found in the ear canal (image of “wet newspapers”). The (ENT) doctor can often recognize the fungal infection when inspecting the ear through black dots or white “cotton wool” amid the outflow. A blue-green or yellow discoloration can also be seen depending on the fungal species.

Prolonged use of certain ear drops encourages the development of a fungal infection by altering the normal balanced composition of the bacteria in the ear canal. It creates space for molds, as it were. An ear culture can suspect a fungal infection confirm.

Investigation in an ear canal

The diagnosis of ear canal inflammation is almost always based on the pattern of complaints and the examination of the ear. In some cases, additional examinations will be required in the form of taking a culture, taking X-rays or conducting tissue tests.

If a contact allergy is suspected, additional allergy testing by a dermatologist may be required to be.

Treatment of an ear canal

In almost all cases, ear canal inflammation is limited to the skin of the ear canal and can easily be cured with local (local) treatment. The complaints disappear after one to two weeks.

Different treatments are possible depending on the type of inflammation:

Acute ear canal inflammation

In the acute form of ear canal inflammation, it is important to thoroughly clean the ear canal (by the (knot) doctor) without damaging the skin (so-called “ear toilet”). As long as this is not done, any treatment will be less effective. The best way to do this is under the sight of an ear microscope by suctioning with a small vacuum cleaner. If the crusts cannot be removed properly, it may be necessary to first drip.

Since the ear canal with the acute inflammation is sometimes narrowed, dripping afterwards – by the patient himself – will not be sufficient. After all, the ear drop does not reach the location of the inflammation sufficiently. For this reason, after cleaning, a tampon (gauze strip) is often inserted deep into the ear canal with an acid ear drop or an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.

It may be necessary to clean the ear canal several times a week and re-insert a clean tampon. If the ear canal has become sufficiently spacious, you can proceed to drip without tampon.

The administration of acid ear drops can cause a burning sensation. Ear drops are often prescribed that contain a corticosteroid, whether or not in combination with one or more types of antibiotics.

Chronic and dry ear canal inflammation

In the chronic form of ear canal inflammation based on eczema and in the dry form of ear canal inflammation, a corticosteroid-containing ear drop often helps enough. The treatment approach is otherwise the same as in the acute form: ear toilet and the use of ear drops, the choice of which is partly determined by the outcome of the culture test.

Fungal infection ear canal

A fungal infection is treated by means of a thorough ear toilet followed by the use of acid ear drops or an antifungal medicine, which can be administered locally via an ear drop or via a tablet or drink. A corticosteroid-containing ear drop should be avoided. In persistent cases, an anti-fungal cream is applied to a tampon.

Pain relief

If the pain is in the foreground, pain relief will be added to the local treatment. In most cases, drugs with analgesic and antipyretic effects are sufficient, which also have an anti-inflammatory effect (so-called NSAIDs).

Antibiotic

Rarely is an antibiotic cure required. If, in the opinion of the (ENT) doctor, this is necessary, it will preferably be given after taking a culture. If the crop is not cultivated – or an antibiotic is already started before the results of the culture is known – a broad-acting antibiotic is preferable due to the fact that the inflammation is often caused by several bacteria at the same time.

Operation

Rarely is surgery required for ear canal inflammation. The cause of a recurring or poorly curable ear canal inflammation can be a narrow entrance to the ear canal. In that case an ear canal operation (meatus plastic) can be chosen, whereby cartilage is removed from the outer part of the ear canal. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. In some cases, the bony part of the ear canal also needs to be widened. Usually it is general anesthesianecessary.

Special forms of ear canal inflammation

Boil

A boil can also develop in the ear canal. The boil is caused by the occlusion of a sebaceous gland in the outer third of the ear canal. This causes a local thickening in the ear canal, accompanied by severe pain and sometimes with fever.

The boil causes extreme pain until it is opened (drainage). This drainage can occur spontaneously, but often help is sought sooner and the boil will have to be relieved. In many cases, ear drops and an antibiotic cure will also be given to become.

Necrotizing otitis externa (malignant otitis externa)

In patients with greatly reduced resistance and / or diabetes patients, ear canal inflammation can spread in the surrounding bone tissue. This is then referred to as a necrotizing external otitis. Severe earache, fever and being sick occur.

A necrotizing otitis externa requires treatment with frequent ear toilets, tamponing, antibiotics and possibly optimal regulation of (possible) diabetes. This is a specialized treatment that usually has to take place in the hospital with an intravenous antibiotic and one ear surgery.

Ear drops

The ear drops for an ear canal are often the same as the ear drops that are given for a carpal caused by a middle ear infection and a hole in the eardrum. Many objections described on the information page about  ear drops  do not apply here, as long as the eardrum is intact.

When using ear drops, a patient should realize that a contact allergy may occur or already exists. The complaints here are the same as those due to external otitis. Because of this it may happen that people think that they treat otitis externa, while the disease is maintained precisely by these drops.

For the commonly used substance neomycin, about 2% of the population has a contact allergy. If this medicine is used more often, such as in the “swimmers’ ear”, this percentage rises to 15%!

For yet another component of a certain ear drop (propylene glycol), the percentage even rises to 50% after frequent use. This substance is also found in many so-called ear wax dissolvers, which are advertised as “cleaner” of the ear canal. Be very cautious about using these resources.

If the ear canal inflammation does not respond well to treatment with ear drops within one week, there may be an allergic reaction to the ear drops or earwax remover. Then contact your ENT doctor. You must also contact us if you develop a fever or if you become ill feels.

Prevention and advice

In addition to the treatments described above, the prevention of inflammation is of great importance. For optimum prevention of ear canal inflammation, also read the information leaflet about  earwax .

The recommendations are summarized here:

  • the ear canal generally cleans itself;
  • avoids fiddling in the ears;
  • only remove visible earwax;
  • do not use matches or hairpins to clean the ear canal;
  • after swimming or showering, drain the water from the ear canal by tilting the head and shaking;
  • careful drying out with a tissue or hair dryer (see  earwax ) is also allowed;
  • if the inflammation always develops after swimming, you can now use a cotton ball with Vaseline, a swimming cap or ear plugs to protect the ear canal;
  • avoid (cosmetics) products if you notice that they irritate the skin;
  • If you often have ear canal complaints when using a hearing aid , have the hearing care professional check if the earpiece fits properly and make an appointment with your ENT specialist to assess your ear.

Final word

It is not possible to describe all details of an ear canal infection on this information page.
It may be that despite the explanation of your ENT specialist you still have questions or you want more information. Do not hesitate to contact your ENT doctor and ask for further explanation.
That request will gladly be met.

Special forms of depression – Everything about it

What is depression?

Everyone sometimes feels gloomy or depressed. For example if you are faced with setbacks or disappointments. These kinds of gloomy feelings (‘depressive symptoms’) disappear automatically and are not a cause for concern. But when a gloomy mood no longer disappears and disrupts your daily functioning, you suffer from depression. Some people are ashamed of their depression or feel guilty about it. That’s not necessary. A depression happens to many people.

Special forms of depression

Depressions can vary in severity: from light to heavy. In addition, there are three special types of depression.

  • Seasonal depression

People with a winter depression get depressed every fall and recover completely every spring. If you experience this for at least two years in a row, you have a winter depression.
But there are also people with severe spring fatigue and gloominess or a summer depression. People with summer depression often suffer from light and mood complaints, feelings of emptiness, stress, insomnia, lack of appetite and tiredness.

  • Postnatal depression

Postpartum depression may occur after delivery (also known as postpartum depression). The woman who recently gave birth feels extremely irritable, depressed, anxiously tired and sad. Such a depression starts within a few weeks or months after the birth.

  • Dysthymia (also called dysthyme disorder)

With dysthymia there are depressive symptoms that are usually not too serious, but persistent. In the case of dysthymia, prolonged gloom causes at least two years. Dysthymia often causes more severe symptoms in the elderly than in the young.

Symptoms of depression

Depression can cause all kinds of complaints. A depression can disrupt your normal life considerably. Both at home, at work and in your free time. You usually have several complaints that last for a longer period of time.

  • With depression you have at least 1 of these symptoms:
    • You feel gloomy and listless (almost) all day long.
    • You are not or hardly interested in things that you would otherwise like.
  • In addition, you can also suffer from:
    • Concentration problems, for example when reading or watching TV.
    • Indecision: making decisions takes more effort, even in very small cases.
    • Being slow and tired or being restless and irritable.
    • Feelings of guilt, or feelings of being superfluous and useless.
    • Sleep problems: poor sleep or a lot of sleep.
    • Disturbed appetite: you don’t feel like eating (and lose weight) or you eat extra (and arrive).
    • Meekness: you experience life as too heavy and can sometimes long for death.

Causes of depression

It is usually difficult to find a clear cause of depression. Depression is often caused by a combination of factors.

  • Biological factors:
    • Heredity plays an important role in depression. In some families, people are more sensitive to depression than in others.
    • Certain substances in the blood and nervous system (neurotransmitters) can play a role in depression.
    • Medication, alcohol, drugs and hormones can increase the chance of depression.
  • Social factors: shocking or radical experiences and intense emotional events can lead to depression. For example: loss through divorce or death, a difficult childhood or a violent incident.
  • Psychological factors: (acquired from an early age) traits can make someone more or less susceptible to depression.
  • Chronic disease: people with a chronic disease such as rheumatism, diabetes mellitus or COPD have an increased risk of depression.

Prevent Depression

A depression cannot always be prevented. But with these tips you can reduce the risk of depression.

  • Eat healthily with lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, whole-grain products, nuts, olive oil.
  • Ensure adequate exercise, at least half an hour a day.
  • Ensure that there is sufficient outside air and sunlight: go outside every day.
  • Invest in social contacts. Touch is also important!
  • If you notice the first signs of depression, contact a specialist healthcare professional. He can offer you the right treatment.

Treat Depression

There are various ways to treat depression.

  • Talking to healthcare providers and / or loved ones

If you are depressed, you may start thinking negatively about yourself. Disappointment, sadness and anger can strengthen your negative feeling. It often helps to talk about your feelings with family or friends. They will probably understand you and want to support you. You can also go to a specialized healthcare professional. They can determine whether you suffer from depression and can offer you the right treatment.

Depression tip

Exercise is very important. Walking or exercising half an hour three times a week can help to reduce feelings of depression.

  • Set achievable goals

It is important that you keep your goals in mind. Try not to set too high demands on yourself, for example that you have to recover quickly or normally be able to do your work. In the beginning you can best focus on simple, everyday, practical activities. It takes time to process depressive emotions. It is important that you allow yourself that time.

  • Maintain regularity

Regularity helps. It is best if you go to sleep at set, normal times and get up again, and eat at set times.

  • Avoid alcohol and drugs

Depression and substance abuse often occur in combination with each other. That is why it is wise not to use alcohol and drugs.

  • To seek distraction

Distraction helps. It is good to go out and get out into the open. Try to find activities that you find fun or relaxing.

  • Exercise and sports

Exercise is very important, even with depression. Walking, cycling, running or exercising half an hour three times a week can help you feel less depressed. You also feel fitter and sleep better if you exercise regularly. In particular, choose a form of movement that you like.

  • To work

If it works, then try to keep working – even if, for example, it is only two half-days per week. Discuss the options with the company doctor if necessary.

Which medicines can you use for depression?

There are a number of medications that can be prescribed for depression. This varies per situation. Drugs that can be prescribed for depression include SSRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and TCAs (Tricyclic antidepressants) .

Tango Dance – Types, History, Styles and Techniques – Dance Facts

Tango History and Popularity

Early tango styles greatly influenced the ways in which we dance today, and tango music has become one of the greatest of all music genres throughout the world. Spanish settlers were the first to introduce the tango to the New World. Ballroom tango originated in working-class Buenos Aires and the dance spread quickly through Europe during the 1900’s, then moved on to the United States. In 1910, tango began gaining popularity in New York.

Tango has become very popular in recent years, as evidenced by the various movies developed around the dance. Several films showcase the tango, such as Scent of a WomanTake the Lead, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, True Lies, Shall We Dance, and Frida.

Tango Music

Argentine tango shares working class origins with American jazz that quickly attracted the interest of classical composers and folk composers who elevated their art. For most Americans, Astor Piazzolla best exemplifies this duality.

Piazzolla’s tango innovations were at first derided by tango purists who hated the way Piazzolla incorporated non-tango musical elements in his compositions. This is a battle that the jazz police and jazz fusion listeners are still waging in the U.S, however, Piazzolla eventually won out. His tangos have been recorded by the Kronos Quartet, who were early advocates, and some of the world’s great orchestras.

Tango Styles and Techniques

Tango is danced to a repetitive style of music, with the count of the music being either 16 or 32 beats. While dancing the tango, the woman is typically held in the crook of the man’s arm. She holds her head back and rests her right hand on the man’s lower hip, and the man must allow the woman to rest in this position while leading her around the floor in a curving pattern. Tango dancers must strive to make a strong connection with the music as well as their audience in order for it to be successful.

Argentine Tango is much more intimate than Modern Tango and is well-suited to dancing in small settings. Argentine Tango also retains the intimacy of the original dance. Several other different styles of tango exist, each with its own individual flair. Most of the styles danced include open embrace, with the couple having space between their bodies, or in a close embrace, where the couple is closely connected at either the chest or the hip area. Many people are familiar with “ballroom tango,” characterized by strong, dramatic head snaps.

Learning How to Tango

The best way to learn how to tango is to look for a class in dance studios in the area. Tango classes are a lot of fun and newcomers tend to pick up the dance quickly.

To learn at home, several videos are available for purchase online. When learning by video, it is recommended to try to take at least a few classes when feeling confident enough, as nothing can take the place of live, hands-on instruction.

Tango Types/Styles

Since tango is highly improvisational, personal and impulsive, it is not strange that it has managed to quickly evolve from its traditional form into dozens of styles that are today practiced all around the world. Musical historians have become aware that tango is one of the most “reactive” dances in the world, being able to be significantly reshaped by various factors, even things such as changes in simple cultural elements (including from big effects such as government regulations to even smaller things such as changes in clothing fashion styles, venue sizes, music, crowding, and more).

Style of tango is also distinguished in the way the dancers are supporting their center of gravity. In Argentine and Uruguayan tango, dancers first move their chests, and then their feet reach to support them. Ballroom dancing, however, uses a different style, where feet move first, and then the center body mass moves . Other styles involve differences in step movements, timings, speed, the character of movement and following of the rhythm.

The embrace of the dancers (called “frame”) which can be tight, loose, in “V” shape or others, can also change from style to style, and even change several times during a single dance routine. Different tango types also use different styles of leg positioning, such as being intertwined and hooked together between dancers or being kept away one from another. Placement of the foot on the floor can also change between tango types, with some requiring landing the foot flatly on the ground, and others for toes to touch the ground first. Finally, the amount of time the dancers stay on the ground can vary, with some tango routines requiring the dancers to keep feet in the air for the prolonged period of time, such as with moves “boleo” (swinging leg into the air) and “gancho” (hooking a leg around a partner).

Here are brief descriptions of some of the most popular types of Tango dances:

  • Ballroom tango – The most famous international version of tango, that originated from Europe and managed to become famously simplified tango style that is used in competitions. The American version of this dance is used only as an ordinary social dance.
  • Salon tango (Tango de salon) – Not a specific tango style per se, but a tango that was first played in dance halls of Buenos Aires during the Golden Age of Tango (1935-1952).
  • Argentine tango (Tango canyengue) – One of the original types of tango that contains all the fundamental elements of the 19th-century traditional Argentine tango styles.
  • Tango nuevo (Nuevo tango) – Developed in the 1980s, this new tango style is distinguished by complex moves, and the mix of jazz, electronic, alternative or techno-tinged inspired elements. Many see Tango nuevo as a mix of tango music and electronica.
  • Finnish tango – Rise of the popularity of tango in Finland in after First World War brought the development of new tango style that promotes contact dance, horizontal movements and low standing stance that features no kicking or aerials.
  • Uruguayan tango – Very old type of tango, developed at the same time as earliest Buenos Aires tango styles. Today, Uruguayan tango consists of several sub-styles and can be danced with several types of music (Tango, Milonga, Vals, and Candombe).
  • Tango apilado – Close embrace tango which is best danced on a crowded dance floor.
  • Show tango – Argentinian version of the theatrical tango that is danced on a stage.

All tango styles are practiced using one of the two types of embraces between lead and follow dances:

  • Open embrace – Lead and follow are dancing with open space between their bodies
  • Close embrace – Practiced either with chest-to-chest embrace (used in traditional Argentine tango) or more loose upper thigh, hip area (common in international and American tango)

Tango dance can also be performed with several types of background music, including:

  • Traditional tango music style
  • Alternative tango music, which is inspired by tango styles
  • Electronic tango-inspired music

Tango Music

Tango music developed at the same time as the tango dance. It was originally played by the European immigrant populations of Argentina, and it continues to be played today all across the world. It’s defining characteristics are 2/4 or 4/4 beat and the focus on traditional instruments such as solo guitar, two guitars, or an ensemble (orquesta típica) that is made out of minimum of two violins, piano, flute, double bass and minimum of two Bandoneon (which are a type of concertina accordion that are especially popular in Argentina, Uruguay, and Lithuania, also known as “tango accordion”). Originally developed by a German instrument dealer Heinrich Band (1821–1860), this instrument was originally brought to the Argentina by German and Italian emigrants and sailors in late 19th century.

Passionate and emotional structure of tango dance is also emulated in its music

At first, tango music was closely associated with the underclass, same as the tango dance, but this style of music quickly reached mainstream in Argentina and Uruguay , fueled by the expansion of the dance and arrival of new composers that captured the attention of the general population. The early expansion of tango music was helped a lot by the arrival of tango song La cumparsita” which was composed in 1916 in the Uruguay.

To this day, Tango music is an important part of the music of Argentina . Tango remains the most internationally known traditional music of this country, but its population also enjoys genres such as folk, pop, rock, classical music, electronic, Cumbia, Cuarteto, Fanfarria Latina, art music and “nueva canción” (folk-inspired music with socially-themed lyrics).

Tango Clothing

The tango dance routines are intimate, passionate and elegant, which has pushed the dancers to dress appropriately. Tango dancers purposelyaim to look their best, while alsopicking outfits that don’t restrict their movement. During the early decades of tango’s popularity, it was customary for women to wear long dresses. This fashion choice remained popular in tango community, although the arrival of shorter dresses and dresses with openings have given female dances freedom to pick their favorite fashion style. Modern tango dresses are very sensual – short, have asymmetrical hemlines, are adorned with intricate fringes and crochet decorations, and show cleavage. They can be made both from traditional and modern (lycra and stretch fabric) materials. As for footwear, women should almost exclusively use high heel tango dance shoes.

Men’s tango fashion is much more traditional, with straight-cut trousers, shirt, and a part of good dancing shoes. Many of the dancers also frequently wear accessories such asvests, hats, and suspenders.

North American Tango

Tango was well-received in the United States where a brand new style of this dance was also developed. Named as “North American Tango”, this type of dance features faster tempos and uses 2/4 or 4/4 rhythms such as one-step. Usually, it is not even danced to the tunes of traditional tango music and can be enjoyed with other popular music styles. Today, traditional tango and North American tango are both well established and can be danced separately with their own firm dancing rules.

Uruguayan Tango

After the rise of tango popularity in the 1880s, Uruguay became one of the oldest places where tango was adopted and danced in public . Originally morphed in Montevideo from the influences of Buenos Aires Tango and various black music and dance styles, it eventually moved from the dance halls of slaves, ex-slaves, lower classes, working classes and even gangsters to the dance and theatre halls of Montevideo and other Uruguayan cities.

Today, Uruguayan tango dance is accompanied not only by tango music, but also styles such as Milonga, Vals and Candombe, and most popular tango dances are Al Mundo le falta un Tornillo, La Cumparsita, Vieja Viola, Garufa, Con Permiso, La Fulana, Barrio Reo, Pato and La puñalada.

One of the most famous and well known Uruguayan tango songs is “ La Cumparsita”, which was produced in 1919 by Montevideo composer and writer Gerardo Matos Rodríguez. Other famous Uruguayan tango musicians are Manuel Campoamor, Francisco Canaro, Horacio Ferrer, Malena Muyala, Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, Enrique Saborido, Carlos Gardel and others.

Finnish Tango

Tango arrived in Finland in 1913 by traveling musicians , where it immediately found great popularity that enabled it to not only stay but morph into a brand new form of Finish tango that has several differences from traditional Argentine or Ballroom tango styles. The defining characteristic of Finnish tango is reliance on minor keys, which closely follows the style and conventions of their folklore music, with lyrics being focused on the themes of sorrow, love, nature, and countryside.

The origin of this tango craze can be traced to the first local tango song that was produced in 1914 by Emil Kauppi, and first, finish tango tunes in the 1920s and 1930s. While initially Tango was danced mostly in Helsinki, it eventually became popular across the entire country, with several festivals being formed to celebrate the dance. Even today, over 100 thousand tango dancers visit Finish tango festivals, the most notably Tangomarkkinat festival in the town of Seinäjoki.

People

Since its popularization, tango has managed to become a phenomenon that has influenced many spheres of life across the world, including sports (synchronized swimming, figure skating, gymnastics), festivals, healthy living, film, music, and more. Many people were responsible for raising awareness of this music and dance, including:

  • Composer and virtuoso of the bandoneón Ástor Piazzolla (1921-1992) who rearranged traditional tango with influences of jazz and classical music into a new style called “ nuevo tango.”
  • Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) – French-Argentine singer, composer, songwriter and actor, today regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of rango. His work became immortalized after he died in the plane crash at the age of 44.
  • Carlos Acuña (1915-1999) – Famous tango singer known for his incredible voice.
  • Néstor Fabián (1938- ) – Famous tango singer and actor in Argentina, best known for his songs and musical comedies.
  • Julio Sosa (1926-1964) – Regarded today as one of the most important tango singers from 1950s and 1960s Uruguay.
  • Olavi Virta (1915-1972) – Famous Finish singer known for over 600 tango songs. He is known as the “king of Finish tango”.
  • And many others

How Much Does A Cord Of Wood Weigh

The only legal unit measurement of firewood is the CORD.

CORD is defined as:

” a loosely stacked pile of split firewood
measuring 4 ft. wide x 4 ft. high x 8 ft. long.”

Firewood Cord
The total volume of a CORD is equal to 128 cubic feet.

There is no legal standard for the “Face Cord”
but it should be @ 45 cubic feet = 1/3 cord.

Beware of sellers offering “Face Cord” or (4 x 8) quantities !!
“Face Cords” should be multiplied (x3) to determine true full cord pricing !!

A cord of wood weighs over 4,000 lbs. and does not fit in a pickup truck–

An average seasoned cord of hardwood weighs more than 2 tons!! Unstacked it will take up to 200 cubic feet in space. An 8 ft. pick up truck would have to pile the wood uniformly at 5 feet tall to fit an ustacked cord. The average pick up truck can only haul 1/2 a cord of firewood at a time.

Seasoned firewood should have less than 30% moisture content –

When wood is fresh cut it contains a lot of water. By properly splitting, stacking and storing wood the will become seasoned once the water is evaporated by the sun and wind. When the wood reaches a moisture content (MC) of less than 30% it will burn properly and release the optimum stored BTU’s (heat). Wood with more than a 30% MC should not be burned indoors!! It is very inefficient and produces dangerous acid water vapor (Creosote) in your chimney.

Now back to the trailer issue…

What does a cord of wood weigh, both dry wood as well as fresh cut green wood?

Check out the below Wood Heating and Weight Values chart to find out what various types of wood weigh when gathered as a cord.

** Weights:

  • Lower value of range assumes 70 cubic feet of wood per cord.
  • Higher value of range assumes 90 cubic feet of wood per cord.
  • Dry weight at 12 percent moisture content.
  • Green weight at 40 to 60 percent moisture content.

All moisture contents based on “wet” wood basis.

Factors That Can Affect The Weight Of The Cord

The weight of the cord can vary depending on what tree is used and whether or not the wood is green or dried. A cord of green wood actually weighs two times more than one that is made up of dried wood because green wood have a very high moisture content.

A cord that is made up of round logs also weighs less than a cord that is made up of split pieces. When it comes to the species of wood used, you need to know that hardwood trees are much heavier than other trees. For the commonly used oak tree, you need to know that red oak can be heavier than white oak.

This is because hardwood trees has more density than softwood trees such as pine. You should also know that the longer the wood has been kept outside, the lighter they will be. Letting the wood air dry on a raised platform is called seasoning the wood and it can help make them lighter and burn better.

How Much Does A Cord Of Wood Weigh?

For a full cord made up of bur oak, freshly cut ones will weigh as much as 4960 lbs. and 3768 lbs. when dried. For a full cord of red or pink oak, freshly cut ones will weigh as much as 4888 lbs. and 3528 lbs. when dried. White oak on the other hand weighs 5573 lbs. when wet and 4200 lbs. when dried.

If your firewood cord is made up of other trees, then you should know that a cord of freshly cut apple wood weighs 4850 pounds, green ash can weigh as much as 4184 pounds, yellow birch can weigh 4312 pounds and willow can weigh as much as 4320 pounds. These are all green weights.

So you can easily get an estimate of how much a face cord would weigh, you will have to divide the weight of a full cord of a specific type of wood by three. So you will know how much the weight of a specific type of dried wood will weigh, you need to deduct around 70% of its green weight.

You can look online for more information about the cord weight of different kinds of trees. There are prepared tables that will help you gather data, and you can also use online calculators that will help you determine how much several cords of a specific type of wood weighs in a matter of seconds.

How Do You Measure Firewood?

This is something that if you plan on using firewood, you should learn. The correct terms for how you measure firewood is in cords, so one or two cords of wood, but there is also a face cord which is measured differently. With a normal cord of wood it is 4 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 4 feet deep which will be 128 cubic feet. Usually this is stacked in what is called a rick of wood, which is 4 x 4 x 8 feet. So if you hear people referring to a rick of wood, that is what it means.

Then you have the other measurement which is called a face cord. A fact cord of wood is a single stack that is 4 feet high and 8 feet wide, and roughly between 12 to 18 inches deep. So as you can tell it is stacked very differently compared to the normal cord of wood, making it generally weigh a lot less. So these are the two units of measurement that you need to keep in mind, when measuring wood.

How Much Does A Cord Of Wood Weigh?

This is one of the more difficult questions to answer since there is never an exact weight with many factors, that need to be added in. For example something like a Basswood (linden) will roughly be about 1990 lbs when dry in a cord, but if it is still green it can weigh up to 4410 lbs. So while you can’t get an exact number, you can get a bit of an idea which will help in your decision making. This is definitely frustrating since I can’t just tell you a number, so if you’re planning to move a cord of wood in your pick up. I would highly recommend doing it in multiple trips.

While I can’t give you an exact number I do have estimations which are as close to an average on some of the more popular firewood in the USA. Which I hope will be able to help you in your search, but if I haven’t listed one that you use. Feel free to leave a comment and I might be able to help or point you in the direction of someone who does.

How Much Does A Cord Of Oak Wood Weigh?

Oak is one of the most common types of wood in the world, and not just the USA. This is for good reason, it is a very versatile wood that burns well and not to difficult to split. It also has quite a nice smell when it burns, if that is important to you. There are four types that most people will use which are Bur, Red, Pin, and White oak.

The Estimations For Oak Wood

  • Bur Oak – When it is still green it roughly weighs around 4970 lbs, which will definitely mean several trips in your pick up. When it is dry it roughly weighs around 3770 lbs, which again means several trips which you will notice is a common theme with this.
  • Red And Pin Oak – If you’re wondering why this are together, it is because they belong in the same group. They’re actually the lightest out of the oaks on this list coming in at 4890lbs when green. Then when it has been dried out properly, it roughly weighs about 3530lbs. So yet again the poor pick up will be making more trips.
  • White Oak – White oak is easily the heaviest of the oaks, weighing roughly 500lbs more then the Bur oak. It weighs roughly about 5580lbs when it is green, which will make short work out of what you’re trying to carry it with. Even when it is dry it still will weigh over 4000lbs, being roughly around 4210lbs.

My Thoughts On Oak

While I really like oak in generally, and is a wood I commonly use in my own home. It can be a pain when it comes to transporting a lot of it, especially when my pick up will only allow me to carry roughly 2000lbs which is on the higher side then most peoples. But apart from the weight, oak is a great type of wood to use and highly recommend.

How Much Does A Cord Of Pine Wood Weigh?

While I personally not a big fan of using Pine wood to burn, since it is a softwood which doesn’t burn as well as a hardwood like the Oaks above. It is still a common type of wood that is used for burning in the USA, so I had to include it on this list to help as many people as possible. There are three types of pine that I have been asked about the most, and they are. Eastern White, Jack, and Ponderosa which all weigh about the same when dry which surprised me.

The Estimations For Pine Wood

  • Eastern White Pine – The Eastern White Pine is the baby of the group, if you can call over 2000lbs a baby! When it is green it roughly weighs around 2790lbs which is the lightest on this entire list. When it’s dry it sheds roughly 500lbs, weighing around 2255lbs overall. Thankfully this will cut how many trips you will have to do!
  • Jack Pine – We are back over the 3000lbs mark with this wood, with it being around 3205lbs from my estimations. It does shed a fair bit of weight when it has been dried out fully, coming close to the 2493lb mark.
  • Ponderosa Pine – The thing with Ponderosa Pine is that it holds more water then most Pine wood. So it weighs more then the others when wet, but when dry it is slightly lighter then the Jack. Being roughly around 3610 lbs when green, and 2340lbs when dry. This is a big surprise to me, but does make life a little easier when it comes to transporting dry.

My Thoughts On Pine

As I stated Pine isn’t for me, but I understand why people use it. It is a very common wood, that is lighter then other woods. Which also makes it easier to split, but it doesn’t burn as well. It can be cheaper as well because of it being a softwood, so if you’re on a budget and can’t cut it yourself. I can get why people need to use pine.

How Much Do The More Common Woods Weigh In A Cord?

While I could list quiet a few more types of wood, I feel focusing on the more common will allow me to help more people, without being completely overwhelming. This may sound strange to some, but I have met many beginner who have said to much info is overwhelming. I like to try and keep as many people in mind as possible.

So on this list I will go over the more common types such as Maple, Cherry, Birch, Elm, Hickory, and Douglas Fir. While the first few are a bit more understandable, the Douglas Fir will catch your eye if you know a thing of too about wood. It’s a lot like pine as in it’s a softwood so it doesn’t burn as well as the others. But it still is quite a popular wood to use, so i wanted to include it on the list.

The Estimations For The More Common Types Of Wood

  • Silver Maple – Silver Maple is a very good wood especially when it comes to burning, it has a low amount of smoke, but decent heat. But in terms of weight it isn’t to bad really, roughly weighing about 3910 lbs when green. It also holds a lot of water when it’s green and drops quite a bit when dried, coming in close to 2760lbs.
  • Other Maple – I made Silver separately since it is a bit different to other maples, while the others are quite similar so they’re together. When they are green they weigh an impressive 4690lbs, and when dried out it is closer to 3685lbs.
  • Black Cherry – Blach Cherry trees are great for there coals when burning making them quite popular as well. When it comes to it’s unseasoned weight, it roughly comes in at 3700lbs. After you dry it, it loses roughly 700lbs coming in at 2930lbs.
  • Paper Birch – Paper Birch is the more popular type of Birch tree for people to burn, because it has some decent heat, and smells quite nice. But in terms of weight it’s pretty heavy, weighing 4315lbs when green. Then after it has been seasoned properly it comes in around the 3000lbs mark.
  • Red Elm – While people burn American, and Siberian Elm. I believe the Red is more common and the better wood to burn if you are choosing an Elm. It’s pretty heavy wood when green, which is about 4805lbs. Then drops well over 1500lbs when you dry it out, coming in at 3120lbs.
  • Bitternut Hickory – Hickory is a heavy hardwood, which makes it difficult to split, but makes it excellent to burn. With the Bitternut coming in at 5040lbs when green, and roughly 3840lbs when dry.
  • Shagbark Hickory – The Shagbark Hickory is just slightly heavier then its Bitternut counterpart, coming in roughly at 5110lbs when green. After you have dried it out it comes down quite a bit as well, being closer to 3957lbs.
  • Douglas Fir – As I said before Douglas Fir is a softwood, so it’s not the best for burning. Which you will notice it is similar to the Pines in weight. With a green cord of Douglas Fir being around 3324lbs, and after drying out being 2975lbs.

Additional Tips For Drying Firewood

Splitting the wood after you cut it will expose the interior of the wood to the wind and sun allowing it to dry faster.  Generally, the smaller you split the wood the faster it will season.

However, splitting the wood too small will cause it to burn faster in your wood stove which makes achieving an overnight burn difficult with a bunch of small chunks of firewood.

I like to leave a few larger pieces of wood that are split once in half that I can use to put on the fire at night.  These pieces burn slower, allowing plenty of coals in the firebox the next morning to easily start the fire.

Stack the wood on pallets, blocks or 2×4’s and avoid stacking your firewood directly on the ground.  This allows air to circulate under the wood and prevents ground moisture and insects from penetrating your stack of firewood.

Choose a location that receives plenty of summer sun which will speed up the drying process.  Avoid dark, shady areas close to your home which could promote mold growth on your firewood.

A covered firewood shed is a great place to store firewood but if you don’t have access to a shed, cover your firewood with a tarp to prevent rain and snow from penetrating the wood.

When using a tarp it’s important to only cover the top 1/3 of the firewood stack.  This allows the tarp to protect the firewood from rain and snow, but also allows the wind to penetrate the wood to dry it out reducing the firewood weight.

Firewood Weight – Overall

Seasoned firewood lights easier, burns hotter and produces less creosote than wet or green firewood.

For best results, plan ahead.  Cut your firewood early and let the sun and wind dry out the wood before you attempt to burn it.  Trust me……burning seasoned firewood makes heating with wood a lot more enjoyable.
